The dog breed Bouvier Des Flandres originates many say in Belgium, but, some will say France and Belgium. Since there is no real agreement, many have haggled over this very fact. This wonderfully calm and affectionate dog is classified as being in the herding group and was intended to herd cattle and other livestock. The Bouvier Des Flandres has a very high tolerance for pain since they often have taken many kicks from cattle and livestock. This makes them sometimes hard to treat by their veterinarian.

Monks at a local monastery in Flanders were said to be the Bouvier’s first breeders. The Bouvier was created by breeding imports such as Irish wolfhound with local farm dogs. This was done until a breed considered to be the true predecessor of the modern Bouvier was obtained. If you want a friendly, laid back, but loves to be active for daily walks kind of dog, you should choose the Bouvier Des Flandres. This dog was used extensively in World War 1 to relay messages in and out of enemy lines. There are some Bouviers that have been trained to be guide and service dogs, and police dogs. This lovely two coated dog has only a few possible health problems and should be watched for hip dysplasia which is common in medium to largerr dogs. Cataracts are also possible with this breed.
