Bouvier Des Flandres

Monks in the Ter Duinen Monastery in Flandres, Belgium were the first to breed and develop the Bouvier des Flandres by crossing an Irish Wolfhound and local farm dogs. At least this is one version of their origin. Another thought, that many believe is that Bouvier des Flandres breeders crossed a Griffon with a Beauceron to create this even-tempered, tireless work dog. Whatever the case, both sources agree on the intended use, herding livestock, guarding homes and families and pulling carts. Today’s uses include companion, watchdog or family guardian. Their employment also extends to guiding for the blind as well as search and rescue.

Although their original beginning remains unclear, one thing is for certain, during WWI the Bouvier de Flandres helped rescue injured soldiers and delivered messages across lines. This placed them in peril during the war and as a result, the breed was almost completely lost. However, thanks to some diligent and resourceful Bouvier des Flandres breeders the breed survived. Through careful and considerate breeding with the few remaining dogs, breeders were able to reestablish the existence of the Bouvier de Flandres. Finally, in 1923 Belgium established their first breed club.

This dog exudes positive characteristics. It is obedient, pleasant and calm. Training tends to be a very easy endeavor, as they are quick learners and have extraordinary memories. Once they have command of an order they will remember it for life. Reputable Bouvier des Flandres breeders will attain early socialization for their puppies and pass on the importance to prospective owners. If these dogs miss the opportunity to meet other people and animals at an early age, they can become shy and suspicious of strangers of all kinds. Obedience training is also a great idea to promote the abundant potential that exists in each one of these dogs.

Adaptation is another quality that emits from this dog. This gives it a wide range of possible owners. This is a gentle and low-key dog that requires minimal exercise, so people from apartment occupants to large homeowners will be able to accommodate this animal. They do need an energetic daily walk to help maintain physical and mental balance. Bouvier des Flandres breeders will have litters that range in size from five to ten puppies, offering a good choice in dogs. These loyal and fearless family protectors will grow to a size of 22-28 inches at the withers and weigh 60-90 pounds. The Bouvier exhibits an innate trait to protect their family. Because they are born with this trait, it will always be a constant in their lives.
