Bouvier des Flandres

The Bouvier des Flandres, translated “Herder of Flanders,” is an older breed of dog that was originally used to herd cattle and sheep as well as to pull carts. Nowadays, they are used as police dogs, guard dogs, and as family pets. The breed had a rough road to get to where it is today. The breed was almost wiped out during both World War I and World War II due to the region in which it lived and its military duties. If you see Bouvier des Flandres for sale, you may be surprised to know that they were originally bred by monks.

The dogs are usually around 25 inches tall and weigh around 110 pounds. They live on average for 11 years, which makes them a good pet for families because they will be their throughout most of a kid’s childhood. They are great with children and do get along well with other dogs and non-canine species. Know that Bouvier des Flandres for sale are very intelligent and are quick to train. While they were trained as guard dogs, they do not possess the aggressiveness of other breeds in that category. They only require a weekly brushing, which some may find surprising given the amount of hair the dogs have. They are very gentle and loyal dogs too. The guarding instinct that they possess comes very naturally to them and they have even been able to put that skill to work as seeing-eye dogs for the blind.

While they may not be very small, their size is not too great for them to be able to live in apartments comfortably. A long walk that is set at a brisk pace or allowing them to run along side you as you ride a bike is sufficient enough for the dog to be both happy and have its needs met.
