All You Need to Know About the Bouvier Des Flanders

Originating from Belgium, the bouvier des flanders, was bred as a herding dog. Although they are still used as farm dogs they are also commonly used as police dogs, guard dogs, and seeing eye dogs. They’ve also been used as ambulance and messenger dogs. They have also found their way into many homes as family pets. The first breeders of these dogs were monks at the Ter Duinen monastery, and they bred farm dogs with Irish Wolfhounds until the desired breed was obtained. They are fairly large dogs generally weighing in around 100-120 pounds. They are a fairly low maintenance breed, but do require weekly brushing of their steel wool like hair and hair trimming occasionally.

The bouvier des flandres have a gentle, loyal, and protective nature. They are also very rational and powerful. They are a very intelligent breed and are very accountable as well. Although this large breed may look intimidating, they are generally rather calm and gentle. Consistent and well-balanced training is recommended because this breed can tend to be overly dominant and protective. Once they learn a command though, they never forget it. One does not need to train this dog to protect its family in times of danger, and you can’t train them not to either. They are excellent with children and possess an outstanding amount of loyalty.

A very healthy breed, the bouvier des flandres, doesn’t suffer from many health problems. They have a high pain threshold which can be a problem at times because if they are hurt they don’t show it. Some dogs do suffer from cataracts and hip dysplasia. Other than that there are no other common health issues that would be of a large concern with this breed. They do require daily exercise which helps to maintain their good health. Their life span averages 10 -12 years.

If one is in need of or wants a loyal and loving family pet or a protective guard dog, the bouvier des flandres is an excellent dog to fill any or all of those positions. This even tempered dog is fearless and has a great spirit.
